It’s not about the movie that I am excited to see. It is the experience of watching a horror movie inside a cinema full of cynical pinoys ready to lambast ridicule at any slight the director might have overlooked in a blockbuster movie made especially in the Philippines.
The Sukob movie we watched last Sunday might have been any other ordinary movie had it not been played by Kris Aquino and Claudine Barretto (and yeah, yeah, the hot Wendell Ramos). Minus the dolby, the huge screen – it could just as well pass as an Asian movie with the likes of The Ring and Ju-on who always have the dead brought back to life and a chain of events that would justify the series of killings the ghost made.. which by the way, the ghost in the movie had no character, no fashion sense and mustn’t have heard of bleach. A black girl in a wedding dress is original. But who is she? Helen, istatue? Did she had a life? A childhood? Has she heard of home cooked meals and fiestas? Aren’t her full cheeks just the cutest?
Sigh. Watching a horror movie on a Sunday night with a date, yeah, i went out with the married guy but it was just a friendly thing (sorry pol!) and I brought along O and Quennie as reinforcement – was very much entertaining because the theater was packed with families and couples and cliques all excited to scream their lungs out not because the movie is scary – but because everybody is doing so and screaming along with make it more fun.
Don’t you just find it funny that there is really someone who will shout ahead on a thrilling scene even before the part where you are supposed to be shocked will come? I find it hilarious that on scenes where people are running there is an occasional, “Daleee! Dagan! Pag-agpas, animal ka mamatay ka!”
Chito Roño’s second attempt to deliver chill deserves a 4 star rating. Clap. Clap.
